Online College rankings by OEDb

OEDb (Online Education Database) released its second annual Online College Rankings (http://oedb.org/rankings) earlier today. OEDb’s Online College Rankings 2008 ranks 41 national studies in colleges and universities that offer most or all of their degree online. OEDb recognizes these colleges and universities as a leader on the extent of granting online colleges.

Upper Iowa University exceeded this year’s ranking, followed by Letourneau University and Liberty University. Other schools in the top ten include: Nova Southeastern University, California University of Pennsylvania, Grand Canyon University, Regent University, Champlain College, Westwood College and Tiffin University, respectively. Other notable rankings of ITT Technical Institute at the 16th to 17th Kaplan University and the University of Phoenix to 25. In 2007, Grand Canyon University tops the list OEDb, including 21 schools ranked.

Each school’s ranking is based on data from up to eight different metrics: acceptance rate, financial aid, graduation rate, peer Web citations, retention rate, scholarly citations, students teachers, and years accredited. The overall rankings list each college (http://oedb.org) by its average ranking of each measure for which data were available.

The online education has grown exponentially over the last ten years due to its flexible, portable, and cost-effective nature. However, online colleges and universities continue to suffer from ambiguity in educational quality which limits the prestige and reputation of a degree online.

OEDb attempts to make online education more transparent with these objectives rankings that compare the most popular accredited online colleges. Ashley Merusi OEDb spokesperson said: “OEDb the second annual Online College Rankings saves students valuable time by ranking the top online colleges in an objective, non-biased way. These colleges in online classified the first ten should be especially commended for their commitment to provide quality education (http://oedb.org) and experience for students. ”

OEDb’s Online College Rankings 2008 is available at http://oedb.org/rankings on the World Wide Web. Last year the list was the first of its kind, and OEDb strives each year to improve its ranking by adding new colleges, increasing its data as more information is available, the evolution alongside online education.
